How to measure for Window Awnings
To ensure you have the best coverage for awnings on your windows, you need to measure your window. In order to understand what you need to measure and why, you need to understand the terminology how your window is installed on your home.
There are 2 types of installation brick mold and non brick mold. Brick mold window frames the outside of your window and fills the gap between window and wall. Most common size of brick mold is 2" but can be as larger. Most brick mold is wood and could be wrapped in aluminum. No brick mold windows do not have a frame around the window and butts up to the wall. Knowing how your window is installed is important for the width of your awning. It determines the available width of an awning. Not all awnings can be cut to fit your space, exactly.
For Brick Mold installations, you need to measure a minimum and a maximum width for your awning to hang. Inside measurements and outside measurements. That will tell your awning manufacturer what width your awning can hang for the best results. For no brick mold installation, you only need width of window plus 2". The measurement of awning is outside to outside. There is a 5/8" butt seam on the inside of the awning so you will need to ensure you have additional space outside the window for the awning to hang.
